A map of the Northern continent of Erisa
Hello, my name is Jeff Mejia. Welcome to the Swords of Erisa website. A Heroic fantasy adventure campaign located in my "Home brewed" campaign world of Erisa, using the AD&D 2nd edition system and played via email. While for me email gaming will never replace the enjoyment of a group of friends gathered around the dinner table to destroy evil, it does have some very attractive advantages.
Convenience- when I was single I was able to game seven days a week if I wanted to (and during spurts of unemployment I often did). However, now that I have a family to see to and other responsibilities, quality gaming time is at a premium. I allow one Sunday every other week to run my own campaigns, and only play as a character on the rare occasion when our local gaming club has an event that I have time to attend. Email gaming allows me get my "gaming fix" any time of the day, even at work.
Roleplaying depth- one of the most enjoyable aspects of email gaming is that a person is able to create characters that are not only highly detailed but are always in character. Gamers tend to take a great deal of pride in their characters, creating elaborate backgrounds, genealogies, and equipment descriptions. But, often when a situation presents itself for role playing at a table top game, they will shy away from really getting into their characters (using a distinct voice, adopting a certain attitude or outlook, etc.). Email gaming allows you the freedom to assume a character and fully explore their persona.
Networking- since i began to play via email i have met dozens of like-minded individuals from around the world. Some have become good friends others i would avoid like the plague. But nowhere else can a person play a game of D&D with a teacher from the Midwest, a computer programmer from Germany, a Sailor stationed in Japan and an architect from Bolivia all at the same time.
In creating the world of Erisa, I gathered material from a number of sources; I say gathered not stole for very good reason. Each instance, when I used material that was previously published in another form, it was because I admired the vision or style of the writer. Look closely at Erisa and you will see Robert E. Howard's Hyboria, David Gemmell's Drenai Saga, John Norman's Gor, and Brian Daley's Coramonde, among others. You'll also recognize works from RPG's such as Birthright, Forgotten Realms, and Greyhawk. I have taken pieces of these worlds and tried to blend them with my own vision of a fantasy world. All of these writers and their works I respect ... and I feel that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Erisa was created for my enjoyment and hopefully for the enjoyment of those in my Campaign. It is not and never will be a vehicle for profit. It's a labor of love.
I would also like to welcome some new friends and new page to this site.
First off there is " Lands of Fate" . Lands of Fate is a PBEM set in the Al-Qadim campaign world of "Arabian Night" flavor adventure. It's a wonderful setting and truly one of TSR's most attractive product lines.
The second new arrival to the site will be "The Sentinels". the Sentinels is a PBEM Game set in a 1930's Pulp Adventure world. this setting uses the GURPS Cliffhanger rules. It should be up very soon!
A very special thanks to Kristen G. for the wonderful Titles and Borders she created for this site.
